President's Message at SIP's 18th Anniversary

Fellow Internet Professionals:

My fellow SIPpers, it is not a small feat that we have survived when many associations in the Internet sector were not able to sustain themselves. We are proud of our achievements in spite of no governments or private funding.

During holidays of Christmas of 1996, I saw the Internet was taking off (websites were transformed from Gopher to Mosaic to Netscape browsers) and as such businesses started putting their websites and felt shortage of "Web-people". But there was no professional standards and certification in those days, which led to the creation of the Society of Internet Professionals, whose mandate was to create such certification.

Around the same time, a pioneer user group of North America called Toronto Internet User Group was coming to the end of its useful life as a tutorial/user group.

After a few months of planning, an inaugural meeting was held very successful at the Sigma Systems Group, Toronto in March 1997, CheckPoint did a presentation about the Firewall, which was attended by more than 60 people. SIP is open to individuals (Professional or Associate Members) and corporate members (Association, Businesses and Institutions).

Since then I am pleases to tell you that SIP has taken a lot of initiatives and accomplished few milestones:

  • A resource intensive website, which ranks on the top page of Google and many other search engines.
  • A members, speakers and corporate sponsors online directories
  • Dozens of full-day workshops provided by industry experts.
  • Established SIP-U, online offering of 350 courses on IT and non-IT topics (now discontinued)
  • Designed our first CIP - Certified Internet Professional: Web Master Programme (a certification designation of SIP) now called AIP.
  • The Accredited Internet Professional (AIP) in various job streams (now discontinued)
  • Chapters in many Canada and USA (now closed)
  • About one-hundred Networking events and forums
  • Attendance at many Trade shows both in Canada and USA
  • Benefit Package for members
If you believe in this organization as I do then please join us as member (corporate or Associate) and become part of any of the above broads and committees.

If you do not have a chapter in your city then please investigate in opening one by becoming a Chapter Director of your city.
